Rhubarb is already almost 5000 years very known by human being, in the beginning not as a vegetable but as a medicin. It was around the year 1600 that Gerarde in England has discovered that you can eat the leafstalks as you eat cutbeet and spinace. It continuned still till about 1750 before the rhubarb gots a great knowledge as vegetable. In Germany the cultare dates as a vegetablecrop from about 1850, in Holland from about 1900.
The forcing of the harvest by bringing the plants(polls) in a dark room is even from a younger date. Further the culture in the open field is been brought more earlier by covering it in Spring with perforated plastic.
